General description:
BIE R&D programs are directed towards the development of reagents and assays facilitating investigation of ubiquitin and ubiquitin-like protein (Ubl) pathway components. Current work includes the expression and/or semi-synthesis of Ubls and their C-terminal derivatives, the expression and characterisation of various deconjugating enzymes and their functional domains, the development of both chemical and immunochemical polyubiquitin-chain binding entities, and the production of an ever expanding range of protein-specific antibodies. Within the greater company, further relevant R&D activities focus on the development of substrates and assays that facilitate the sensitive and specific detection and determination of protein post-translational modifications with particular emphasis on protein acetylation and methylation.

Role in RUBICON:
As a participant in the furtherance of the scientific goals of the Network, BIOMOL’s contribution will focus on the development of immunochemical and biochemical tools and assays facilitating dissection of the ubiquitin and ubiquitin-like protein cascades including: the development of specific antibodies; expression, purification and characterisation of key enzymes; peptide/protein modification; and the development of assays for the quantification of de-conjugating enzyme activities.

As a provider of key technology via a ‘Core Facility’, BIOMOL is making available to all Network Partners its considerable experience, expertise, and capability in the synthesis of peptides; production, purification, and characterisation of antibodies; and in protein expression, purification and analysis.
