General description: The research of the group centers around the immunobiology and tumor virus infections with particular focus on the mechanisms of cell transformation by the human gamma herpes virus Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) that is implicated in the pathogenesis of lymphoid and epithelial cell malignancies including Burkitt’s lymphoma, Hodgking’s lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Modulation of the ubiquitin/proteasome system in virus infected cells is studied in relation to modulation of antigen processing and alterations of proteolysis in malignant cells. Role in RUBICON: The group will study viral modulation of the ubiquitin proteasome system aiming to dissect the molecular interactions involved in the inhibitions of ubiquitin-dependent proteolysis by the EBV Gly-Ala repeat and the role of viral and cellular deubiquitinating enzymes in the regulation of cellular processes and viral replication.
