General description: The IFOM was founded in 1999 to serve as a common house for many excellent institutions in Milan for advanced studies in post-genomics applied to oncology. The interests of the institution include cell cycle regulation, signal transduction, cancer genetics, cancer immunology, angiogenesis, and structural biology. IFOM adopts an open structure model that inspires communication and collaboration between research groups. Its success relies on competitiveness in fund raising, at both national and international levels. This allowed the hiring of group leaders with competitive start-up packages and salaries, an internal fellowship program for PhD students and post-docs, and the creation of state-of-the-art, shared facilities and resouces for imaging, DNA and tumor micro-array, mass spectrometry, DNA sequencing, Bioinformatics, protein expression and model organisms (from C.Elegans to mouse).
