THE DAILY TELEGRAPH refers to a recent paper published by Professor John Mayer and collaborators in The Journal of Neurocience . Dr. Paul Sheppard from BIOMOL and a RUBICON partner is coauthor of this publication.
Professor John Mayer and collaborators genetically engineered mice lacking an essential gene for the waste disposal process of the cells. The gene that was specifically inactivated in neurons causes a disease known as dementia with Lewy bodies. This disease is the second most common form of dementia and is thought to affect more than 100, 000 people in Britain. Prof Mayer said that this mouse model is the first platform to understand how the brain cells deterioration takes place. This will help to identify targets for new drugs to slow or prevent the disease.
