The second meeting of the Rubicon Network of Excellence has been held in Rome (February 22 to 25, 2008), in the hotel Domina Roma Cappella, in the south of the city. We all enjoyed the visit of this great, incredible historical city with its sunny weather. This was possible either for a whole afternoon, or a few hours in case of group leaders.
This meeting differed strikingly from the first plenary meeting. Rather than presentations by group leaders of achieved work, or global projects, in most cases, the 38 (!) oral presentations concerned unpublished, in progress work. Moreover, many talks were done by “young” investigators (Rubicon post-docs, a few permanent researchers, and even PhD students), with (or without) introductions by group leaders. The meeting began with presentations around two type of approaches that have a special place presently in the ubiquitin field: the search of functions (ex: case of DUBs in signalling) by RNAi screens, and the contribution of mass spectrometry, even in the difficult case of modification by branched chains. The three sessions were then organized along the lines of the three workpackages of the network (components, fate, functions), and we discovered new actors, domains, mechanisms. We could all realize the progresses made for all subjects during one year. The presentations were all followed by questions/discussions, in a friendly atmosphere. There was ample time for the three poster sessions, that were especially animated. The group leaders, who had in parallel to two posters sessions, the EU evaluation and the steering committee meeting, felt slightly frustrated of the limitation in their participation to these discussions…
The participation of the labs was manifested by the high attendance of their members, many students/post-docs already knew each other, thanks to their participation to prior Rubicon/Ubiregulators meetings/courses, and this was a driving force facilitating the exchanges. In addition to multiple scientific discussions, we all appreciated the possibility of personal exchanges, notably during the social dinner, held in a beautiful restaurant, within one of the historical district of Rome. In summary, this meeting was highly enjoyable, and we all thank the IFOM organizers…
