General description:
The University of Dundee became an independent university in 1967 after a 70 year relationship (sometimes stormy) with the University of St Andrews which is now a key partner. Its origins go back over a hundred years to 1881 when University College, Dundee was founded with the forward looking mission of "promoting the education of persons of both sexes". It has doubled in size over recent years to 15,000 students and over 3,000 staff.

The most recent merger was with the Dundee campus of Northern College in late 2001 to create a seventh faculty - the Faculty of Education and Social Work. In 1996 the university absorbed the two local nursing colleges to create a single School of Nursing and Midwifery within the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. In 1994 merged with next door neighbour Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art.
