18 Rubicon members joined the Rubicon proteomics course, held at the Max-Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Munich, from Monday April 30th to May 4th.

The objective of the course organized by Rubicon partners Matthias Mann and Ronald Hay was to give students and young researchers the opportunity to learn state-of-the art proteomics techniques useful for deciphering the roles of ubiquitin and ubiquitin-like proteins. There were ten lectures and the majority of the course consisted of hands-on training. 18 participants, including 16 Rubicon members, were able to prepare samples for mass spectrometry analysis. This included TAP-Tag purification as well as quantitation of ubiquitinated proteins at a proteome-wide scale using quantitative proteomics (SILAC). They saw in detail how to operate the two most advanced mass spectrometers, named LTQ-FT-ICR and LTQ-Orbitrap, and learned the data analysis procedures. A broad range of theoretical lectures helped them to understand the potential and complexity of the highly interdisciplinary field of proteomics. Thanks to a continuous interaction between participants and instructors, the atmosphere was productive and open to critical discussion. In addition to the unique and typical atmosphere of “Bavarian biergartens” and restaurants, the wonderful weather made the atmosphere even more pleasant. This contributed to extend the participative spirit from the laboratory to outdoors social activities. Feedback from participants’ questionnaire indicated that the course has been very useful and highly enjoyable.
