Links: Thorsten Hoppe's Laboratory The Cologne Cluster of Excellence on Cellular Stress Responses in Aging-associated Diseases (CECAD Cologne) offers the unifying driving force bringing together researchers and clinicians at the University of Cologne with researchers at the new Max Planck Institute for Biology of Aging in a unique research venture to advance understanding in this field. The mission of CECAD Cologne will be to unravel the molecular mechanisms underlying lifespan regulation and aging-associated diseases to set the ground to achieve its long-term objective of developing novel therapeutic interventions.

General description: The main interest of the group is based on developmental processes in multicellular organisms that are governed by ubiquitin. Current research addresses the molecular mechanism of polyubiquitin chain assembly in physiologically relevant pathways. Beside protein aggregation diseases, the lab is interested in the interplay between protein homeostasis and aging/longevity. Role in RUBICON: In addition to myofibre differentiation and muscle maintenance implicated in protein aggregation diseases (Janiesch et al., Nat. Cell Biol. 9, 379-390, 2007) the group will study certain aspects of DNA metabolism (Mouysset et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. 105, 12879-84, 2008) which are linked to aging. The model organism Caenorhabditis elegans and state of the art techniques including particle bombardment and microinjection to produce transgenic worms, second generation sequencing (Solexa) for sequencing C. elegans mutants and time-lapse microscopy will be provided.
